Paris is one of the most visited cities on earth, and for the overwhelming majority of travellers it is a delight rather than a hazard. Serious violence against visitors is uncommon. But Paris also has a long-established, highly organised street-theft economy, and luxury travellers — recognisable, carrying value, often distracted by the city itself — are squarely within its sights.
This is a measured look at the real risks and where discreet protection in Paris is worth it, written for principals and the assistants who plan their travel.
The Real Risk Is Theft, Not Violence
The dominant risk in Paris is acquisitive crime executed with skill. Pickpocketing on the Métro and around the major landmarks, distraction teams working the luxury arcades and department stores, and the targeting of visibly wealthy shoppers leaving boutiques on and around the Avenue Montaigne and the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré are all well documented. Watch and jewellery theft has risen. None of this should keep anyone away from Paris — but it does reward awareness.
Where an Officer Changes the Equation
A protective officer's role in Paris is rarely dramatic. It is to hold the perimeter of attention so the principal can enjoy the city without becoming a mark — managing the boutique exit, the pavement, the busy station concourse, the moment of distraction that thieves are trained to exploit. Paired with a security-trained driver who handles arrivals and departures, this removes most realistic exposure for a luxury visitor.
A Regulated, Discreet Profession
In France, close protection is a regulated profession. Under the Code de la sécurité intérieure, every protection agent must hold a valid CNAPS professional card, and the operating company must hold a CNAPS authorisation. Armed protection is tightly restricted. As in London, the right Paris detail is discreet by design — the aim is to be unremarkable, not conspicuous.
Plan Quietly, Move Normally
Most visits do not call for a standing team — they call for judgement about which days, which events and which movements warrant cover. We have written before about how the city's risks intersect with wealth in a recent Paris case; the lesson is the same one that runs through all of our travel guidance. Plan quietly, move normally, and keep value out of sight. Paris is for enjoying — discretion is simply what lets you do so without becoming a target.
