Medical Travel Protection: The Most Private Journey You Will Ever Make

A clinic in Switzerland, Germany, London or the United States is the easy part. The airport, the hotel lobby, the hours a family waits and the days afterwards are where a treatment abroad leaks. How protection and privacy work around a medical trip.

Medical Travel Protection: The Most Private Journey You Will Ever Make

People travel for treatment to Geneva, Zurich, Munich, London, Paris, Dubai and the American clinics because the medicine is good, and the clinic will take care of the medicine. What nobody takes care of is everything around it: the arrival at an airport where someone might recognise you, the car that pulls up outside a building whose name says exactly why you are there, the hours a husband or a daughter spends in a corridor, the days afterwards when you are not yourself, and the plain fact that a treatment abroad is information that competitors, the press and sometimes family members would pay to know.

That is the part a protection house covers. We are not a medical provider and we never see a record. We protect the person and the privacy of the journey. This is how it works.

The trip itself, kept quiet

Hotels are booked under the name you choose. Cars do not stop at the clinic's front door. The clinic liaison is one named person; the hotel is told nothing about why you are in the city; no itinerary ever carries the word clinic. Every officer, driver and assistant signs an NDA before a date, a name or an address is shared. For a public figure the hotel lobby and the clinic door are the two places a story starts, and both are handled by a low-profile officer who manages the floor, the entrance and the photographer who already knows.

Arrival, and an officer who waits

A licensed close protection officer, female or male as you prefer, meets the flight airside, with luggage and wheelchair assistance where needed and a car at the kerb, and the first move to the hotel or straight to the clinic is planned around how you feel rather than around a schedule. Through consultations, scans and surgery, and through the hours a family spends waiting, someone capable is present who knows the building, speaks the language, deals with the hospital's own security and keeps the people who should not approach from approaching. An officer can take a child to the park while a parent is in the clinic.

The days afterwards

Recovery is often when protection matters most, because you are not yourself and you are visible. The hotel suite or a rented residence after discharge, the pharmacy run, the follow-up appointment, the first walk: covered quietly, at the level you choose, with a female officer where the patient prefers one. For women travelling alone for treatment, a female officer who reads as a friend through the clinic and the days after is usually the right answer. See female travel protection.

Where patients are treated

The private clinics of Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, Munich, Heidelberg and the Swiss and German lake towns treat patients from the Gulf, Russia, Africa and the Americas every week, with officers licensed in the canton or the Land who know the clinics and their security. Harley Street and the London private hospitals, and the Paris specialists, bring the risk of recognition. Dubai treats the region; Houston, New York, Boston, Rochester and Los Angeles treat the world, and for a long-haul patient the journey is the hard part: the flight, the arrival when you are unwell, the weeks of stay, the family coming and going. Licensed partners in each place provide the officer, the driver and the clinic liaison, with one contact throughout. See Geneva and London.

Medical flights and older parents

Where a flight with medical crew is required, it is arranged through licensed air-ambulance and private aviation partners, with the officer on the ground at both ends. A father or mother treated in Switzerland or London while the family is elsewhere gets a capable adult at their side every day and a word home every evening, which is its own service: see senior travel protection.

What it costs

A licensed officer is from EUR 950 per day in Europe, the market base, and from USD 900 per day in the Gulf and the United States, for twelve-hour cover. A security driver with an executive vehicle is quoted separately and is usually the most useful addition on clinic days. Longer stays are quoted as a programme, which costs less per day than a series of short assignments. Medical flights and the clinic's own services are passed through at cost. For many patients a driver and an officer on call is the honest answer rather than daily cover, and we say so before you commit.

Notice

At least seven days, to match the right officer, plan around the clinic and brief the hotel. Treatment dates are usually known in advance, so most patients give more. The clinic will remember your case. Nobody else should remember you were there.
