A Personal Shopper in Milan, London or Dubai: How the Day Runs and What It Costs

Most people searching for a personal shopper do not want a stylist. They want a day that works: appointments made before they land, a car held all day, the tax refund done at the counter and nobody following the bags back to the hotel.

A Personal Shopper in Milan, London or Dubai: How the Day Runs and What It Costs

The phrase "personal shopper" suggests someone with opinions about your wardrobe. That is available, if you want it. What most clients actually want is simpler and harder to get: a day in Milan, London or Dubai that works. The right boutiques open to them at the right hour, someone beside them who knows the houses and speaks to the staff in their language, a car outside when the bags get heavy, a table at lunch, the tax refund done properly, and, when the purchases run into real money, the quiet certainty that nobody follows them back to the hotel. That last part is why a protection house runs this service at all.

Appointments are the whole game

Milan's Quadrilatero can be walked in an afternoon only if every door is already expecting you. Harrods by appointment is a different store from Harrods on a Saturday: private suites, the right advisor on each floor, a car at the right door. Fashion Avenue in the Dubai Mall is the best shopping floor in the Gulf with an appointment and a lost day without one. So the day is built before you land: the houses in the right order, private rooms booked where they exist, the jeweller who opens on the day you want, lunch where it fits. During Fashion Week, Design Week, December, Ramadan evenings and the summer in London, those rooms are reserved weeks ahead, and nobody opens them at short notice for anyone.

One professional, all day

One person walks the day with you from the hotel to the last boutique, speaks to the house in its own terms and to you in yours, and handles sizes, alterations, the forms and the shipping. English is standard, with Italian in Milan and Arabic in Dubai; Arabic, Russian, Chinese, French, Spanish and Portuguese speakers are a standing part of the network on notice. A car and a driver are held for the day, in the shade in Dubai, on a side street in Mayfair, on Via Verri rather than circling, so that the bags go into the boot and never down the street.

The honest part about tax

Non-EU residents can reclaim Italian VAT on purchases above the legal threshold, but only if the boutique issues the form, the goods leave the EU with you and the refund is validated at the airport or through the operator's desk, which is where most refunds are lost; the paperwork is done at each counter and the airport is planned so that the validation actually happens. The UAE refunds VAT to visitors on eligible purchases from registered retailers, registered against your passport at the counter and validated before departure. The United Kingdom does not: the visitor refund scheme ended in 2021, goods carried out of the country are not refunded, and anyone promising a counter at Heathrow is mistaken. Goods a London house ships directly to an address abroad are treated differently, and the day is planned around that rather than around a counter that does not exist.

What nobody can do

No one gets you a Birkin or a waiting-list watch on demand, and anyone who promises it is about to sell you something else. What a good shopper gets you is the appointment, the honest answer from the house, your name on the right list and the next best thing in the meantime. In the Gold Souk, the difference between a delighted visitor and a cheated one is knowing the day's rate per gram, the purity marks, the making charge and when to walk away; we go with you to the jewellers we know, or we tell you to buy on Fashion Avenue instead.

Bags, boxes and the walk back

What you would rather not carry is shipped under asset transportation arrangements with the export paperwork done correctly. What you would not trust to a box, a watch, a piece of jewellery, is carried by hand by a licensed officer: see hand-carry courier. And when the purchases justify it, protection is folded into the same day and the same brief: a discreet officer who carries nothing visible, a car that is always outside and a route back to the hotel that nobody follows. For public figures the store is opened early, the side entrance is used and the day is run as a protection movement.

What it costs

A shopping day is quoted against the day itself rather than from a menu: how many houses, how many people are being dressed, whether a car and driver are held, which languages are needed, and whether the day ends in a purchase that needs covering to the hotel. You get one figure before anything is booked and it does not move afterwards. The goods are invoiced to you by the boutiques at their own price; our fee is a separate line, there is no commission from the houses, and drivers, restaurants and shipping are passed through at cost. For clients who come to these cities more than once a year, membership is usually the better route, from EUR 95 per month at Client Access. Seven days' notice for a normal day.
